Hello there...
You thought I forgot about what I promised a couple of days ago, didn't you? ... And instead, I didn't. I was just busy with work stuff. At the moment I am stuck on the boat with the Owners on board! They decided to stay for 5 weeks, cruising around and enjoying life. Two more weeks 'til freedom! But who's counting? LOL
In the meantime, I am here now to tell my story. Sounding a little bit dramatic, aren't we? It seems like I am starting some kind of confessional post where I finally reveal what brought me to kill my whole crew (they deserved it... they ate my Chocolate) but fear no more f-list... You know that with me it's all about LoVe, no random killing, I promise! Even if... Try to work and live with 25 other people on board with no separation, plus the stress of having to take care of a handful of guests for 5 weeks... You have to be a saint not to, at least, have the tiniest intention to sneak in someone else's cabin and make it look like it was an accident... But, before talking about drama in the yachting industry... and there is A LOT... (if you are into Reality Shows take a peek at Below Deck... it is our guilty pleasure during this trip... That's kind of my life at the moment!) let me share my wisdom.
Here's a list of 10 easy steps to get the Job and the Boy...
Truth is... I can only say, I was very lucky to find myself in the right place at the right time... I don't even think that 'lucky' is the right word... because... come on... what are the odds? I wanted to join that boat for so many reasons back then. Adventure, Money, a better Chance... but mostly: Love. Without that, I would have never have had the courage to do such a thing. Leave my life behind... my family, my friends, my everything. My head was confused. Torn between a simple life, with a career ahead... or, something unknown and exciting.
The most difficult part was that I was actually liking my job as a waitress (at the beginning of my career -and then, as manager toward the end) even if my friends, who have known since they were 5, what they wanted to be... always said to me that I could do so much better... I always responded that the title doesn't matter, if you put passion into what you do... and, at the end of the day, it is not the Job that defines you -you define yourself. A job is just a way to have some money in your pockets... Money that will allow you to express yourself in all your beautiful ways... And also, these days, you have to take what the World offers you or you are screwed... I apologize for my crude honesty here, but I think that sitting beneath the tree, waiting for the apple to fall in your hands and just doing nothing, is not the best idea... Sometimes it falls, but most likely it won't... The apple fell from the tree for me... and it hit me square on the head. I was shaking the tree for another one, and a better one fell off instead.
I admit also that I never had a clue as to what I wanted to do with my life, having too many passions and not a single one of them being predominant.
Applying for that waitress job brought me into this world... that, of course, has a lot of ups and downs (we will talk about that later) as any other job on the Planet, but when the downs are as deep as a hole to the center of the Earth, the ups are pretty damn good. I mean, I cannot even tell you how much I earn now and how many amazing places I have visited in less than a year!
Now this is what I do and this is who I am. What's fun about me, is that tomorrow everything can change all over again, and I am ready for that. I have learned to live this way. But even when everything is uncertain, there is something I can say I am pretty sure won't change that easily... and that is:
This might be The Job right now... and I will probably find 10,000 other jobs that suit me even better... but nothing can be more right, and more perfect, than the boy's hand holding mine through all the madness.

Here's a list of 10 easy steps to get the Job and the Boy...
How to get the Job |
How to get the Boy |
1. Shop online for an Owl (or some other pet you would like to own) and instead find a job advertisement as a waitress in a restaurant in the Port Area. The nice one, not the commercial Port. Apply. 2. Start in a week from the bottom level and waitress your way up to the top. In order to do that, see that you are the only one who can speak a foreigner language. In my case: English. 3. Be the girl that waits on that cute boy who always dines by himself and try to keep him company while you work. Also, make him your best and most faithful client, suggesting to him a better (and more expensive) dish 4. Ask the Boy about his job and what it's like to work in the Yachting Industry, also ask him what one would do in order to pursue a similar career. He will probably tell you, that you will have to start from the bottom with smaller boats and then sail your way up, maybe even take some 5. Ask your most knowledgable friend the same question you asked the Boy and expect the same answer, but with some bonus material. Something along the lines of "...by the way, I am going to come to the restaurant tonight to dine with a good old friend of mine who also happens to be a captain of one of these yachts. 6. Even if it is a busy night, make sure you find the time to go talk with your friend and his 'guest', and wait for your friend to start the conversation. And, when the opportunity presents itself, ask the captain the very same question. 7. Be the luckiest b!t*h on the Planet. Apparently, your Karma will decide that you are worthy of something really good and it will make sure that that Yacht currently has a position available (!?)... since someone with bad Karma just got fired or quit or... who cares?! 8. Find out his Yacht is the same one the Boy works on... and then, try not to faint in front of your soon-to-be new boss. 9. Go to the interview and nail it! Get your blood tested and... nail that, too! Then take the basic courses and certifications (STCW95) and - of course - nail that as well! 10. Join the boat... cross the Ocean... and get ready for your * B I G * adventure. |

Be the girl that waits on that cute boy who always dines by himself and try to keep him company while you work. Also, make him your best and most faithful client, suggesting to him a better (and more expensive) dish to get a higher tip because you are awesome at your job and you put a lot of money in your boss' pockets. Be sure though, that he is the One otherwise, this is not going to work. 4. Ask the Boy about his job and what it's like to work in the Yachting Industry, also ask him what one would do in order to pursue a similar career. He will probably tell you, that you will have to start from the bottom with smaller boats and then sail your way up, maybe even take some expensive courses in order to have more to offer to your future boss (like a bar tending course, a wine course, a massage course,...) He will also probably suggest that you ask some other people in the business what to do. And, meanwhile (since you are a clever girl) you would already have made some influential friends in the Port Area. 5. After a series of amazing circumstances (see the "How to get the Job" section) get an interview with the captain of his boat. 6. Drop the bomb (about the interview) next time he comes for lunch or dinner. He will give you his e-mail address with some excuse like: "let's keep in touch so I can let you know how things progress". 7. Send him an email a couple of days later (no sooner). Note: It has to be work related, but also a little bit personal. You don't want him to think you are contacting him just for the job... but also, you don't want it to seem like you are coming on too strong. 8. Start flirting over e-mails waiting for him to ask you out on a proper date... It will take him time, because, after all, he is a Boy... but no matter what levels your frustrations reach... do not make the first move -FULL STOP- Because, let's face it, you are a hopeless romantic... also - even if you are a feminist - it is always better when it is the guy who makes the first move. 9.Enjoy each other's company while you are waiting for an answer from the captain, and bring the relationship to the next level... start going out on real dates and make him fall tremendously, deeply in love with you. This is not going to be difficult... because, if he is the Boy, then you are the Girl! 10. Join the boat... cross the Ocean... and get ready to be the * H A P P I E S T * girl on the Planet. |
