No LJ... WHY?

I don't know if you guys noticed but, LJ now gives you the option to leave a heart to an entry... You all know what it means... People will stop comment and just heart entries! I really don't like this because I like to have conversations with my friendlist, and I hope I'm not the only one feeling disappointed by this new addition!

I really don't understand the need for it! I understand it in socials like instagram, because you're saying you're liking that photo, but what about here? It doesn't make any sense... Here a post about my day and its ups and downs... heart... What does it mean? LJ is a place where we use words to espress ourselves and create a dialogue with other people... These hearts are not lovely, are a way to say "I read it, I'm not taking the time to write a comment, I have to do something else". This is very upsetting to me!

I wil heart entries, if there is something to heart (like a photo post or a video post) but I will always comment, because this is why I am here, to create a dialogue and get to know people! Basically hearts don't get us closer... They keep us apart!

This is how I feel about it.

P.S. I'm on my lady days so I feel pretty strong about a lot of things xD

Ohh noooo!!
I saw it on a comm just a few hours ago and didn't know what the hell it was.
I'm seriously hoping it doesn't go further than this, but I do have faith that people will still comment. At least I hope they will o.o THat's the whole point of this place.

That's probably what I will do, heart entries if there is something in it I really like, and comment. My feelings about this are in line with yours.

The cynical pessimistic side of me feels like it will, and it won't be a surprise if it will.
I'd like to think and hope that it won't though.
We can gripe and complain all we want, but with LJ's track record, they won't listen.

I strongly disagree with this too! It is not part of LJ culture at all. We read here - it's not just peep-and-scroll.

I can't see the heart yet though. I wonder if it's because I'm still using a very old version of LJ or if they are rolling it out gradually.

I think it depends on the layout... On the feed page - with the classic layout - you can see them! My layout doesn't show them luckily, but soon they'll get here too :(

LJ is all about having a dialogue with people... These "likes" mean nothing!

It only shows in the feed page and not on all the layouts... If I visualize my feed page with my layout I can't see them... But I think eventually it will be shown everywhere! :(

Heh. You're the second one on my f'list to post about this. I don't think it'll change anything. Rather I HOPE it won't change anything. What I said to theirs was this: I want a like/heart option on COMMENTS, not entries.

I saw this too yesterday! So upsetting. I may not always have the time to read or comment on every post on my flist but I can't ever imagine just giving a <3 instead. It feels so impersonal. I mean it's fine for instagram and facebook but, as you stated, that is not what LJ is about. Sigh :/

I agree with you! the heart is okay with some entries but definitely not long serious ones. I didn't see this coming! LJ is becoming lots more like anything else.

I even think the thumbs up on facebook can be used wrongly. Like I sometimes see people like sad articles. I never understood why....

They finally put different options on facebook... But I think that the "likes" nowadays are ways to say "I read it/I saw its anyway wrong...

I'm fairly certain I'll be ignoring that heart 99.9% of the time. I can think of some good reasons to use—depressed days being one—but, yeah, I'm on LJ to have meaningful communication with people. I think the loss of old LJ culture has made people forget that a small comment means more than a click.

Exactly! There might be a photo/video post you might like but still I'd rather accompany that heart with a comment... To me a heart with no comment means "I passed by, I didn't have time to read, here let me put a like on it so I can move on"

Luckily the majority of the people who's on LJ it's here for the dialogue and not to get more clicks and become popular...

I think most users are against them, I haven't seen many entries being liked on my flist at all so far (I'm seeing likes more on community entries), so hopefully people won't use them as an excuse to get lazy about commenting!

I disagree, haha. Even though I do not expect to be a big user of this, I think the more tools and flexibility the better. I do not want to restrict other people in using LJ the way they feel they want to just because I want to use it differently. And nobody is forcing us to use it, right? ). It is not possible to force people into having real conversations by not giving them "like" buttons. And in general I have always found all that pushing people into commenting quite psychotic. If people comment out of fear of being unfriended or just to pay you back for commenting in their journal, those are not real conversations anyway. Forcing, extortion, restriction are not things that can stimulate real things that matter. They distort everything and turn love into rape or prostitution, gift into trade or extortion, etc. And the only thing worse than not having real conversations is having pretend real conversations (that deep down we know we extorted from people by whining, etc). The only real way to get real feedback and conversations is to post content people want to talk about and find your true readers, who read you because they want to and not just because you read them. It might take much longer and be much smaller but it will be real. And any conversations that could be killed just by having a "like" button probably were not worth having anyway. Just my view ).

I'm sorry if this is what you get from my not liking this feature...

I don't plan to restrict or force anyone to do what I want them to do... I'm not wired that way! I just think LJ is not the place for it! I had this reaction even when Instagram got its "new" feature and it became a sort of snapchat. I think all the socials wants to have the same features in order to be more popular, when it's their difference that makes them better and unique! This is my opinion and I'm not forcing it into anyone's head!

I don't think it's useful to have a "like option" in a place where we share personal stories that cover more than one topic per post In the same post we might talk about TV shows, something personal and a book we're reading, and I don't see what't the meaning of a "heart" to something like that.

I'm not forcing people into commenting, I never did and I never will. I'm sorry if you think I'm someone like that for some reason... And I'm not the kind of person who unfriend people who don't comment, or unfollow people on other socials for the same reason... I'm not here to be popular and I don't comment other people entries to get a comment back...

I leave a nice comment to basically every post I read (if I have something to say) You post very cool pictures and I think it's nice to leave a comment saying I liked the picture or that it's funny... I do that everywhere. I comment on photos on facebook instead of just like the album without watching it... Because I know that the person who uploaded it put some time into it, and I think t's great to share something that means something to us... And I couldn't care less to receive something in return! I like to write a quick nice comment to your pics but I have no agenda, and please don't feel forced to comment on my posts because I comment on yours... I added you on a friending meme because I was coming back to LJ after a long time, and I came back with a different vision and I wanted to find people with whom I could share some interests...

Here all I did was expressing an opinion on a feature. I respect your opinion and I understand what you are saying... I'm extremely on your side on the quality over quantity... But to me, this feature doesn't belong here! To me means something different.

Oh, I did not mean any of that stuff to be about you personally. Please do imagine me saying it with a smile and with the friendliest tone you can imagine, because this is how I mean it ). I definitely don't meant it as any kind of personal feedback for you.

I was just bringing up what I saw a lot on LJ in general (I am sure you did too) in expressing my view, I assumed that's what you expected after posting yours. And I enjoy a good debate ). I would never make it personal though, as I didn't here. I do not understand however why people think that a single user can and need to decide what does and does not belong on a large platform used by many people in different ways. As long as no one is forcing me to use it, I cannot say it does not belong here. The only reason to be threatened by additional functionality that I see is that it will suit some people's needs better than commenting and we want not to give them that opportunity because we want them to comment. But I do not think it is right not to give someone the opportunity to do what they want so that they do more of what we want. Also I do not see why people assume that those who will "like" will just scroll down, not look at the entries and put it blindly? Likewise we can say that people can put "Cool" and "Nice" comments blindly as well. Many people might actually look at your entries, like them and say so if it suits the entries by using this feature. And if doesn't suit the entry then just not using it solves the problem really. Why wouldn't it belong here? I understand that some of us might want to forge close friendships here, etc but such use of what is a blogging platform can hardly be argued to be the main way to use it. It is first and foremost what it is, a collection of journals to read. And those benefit from feedback. And the more ways there are for it, the better. It doesn't restrict us to keep using it as we do, LJ can keep meaning to us what it always has. And giving other people better functionality to find the meaning in being here that suits them better should not threaten us I think.
