Binge Watching: The Night Manager

I must be one of the few people who started the show because of Hugh Laurie!
I obsessed over this guy for years, and House is the show that started everything for me. Before that I was just watching TV without paying too much attention... Never went on the internet looking for things like spoilers, music videos, fan fictions... Never knew what a fandom was and - damn it - I wasn't even able to read or understand english that well. So it was Hugh Laurie who gently pulled me into this world and I owe him a lot somehow.

The night manager is SO.GOOD and you don;t need me to tell you what it is about because you just need to watch it!

It's interesting how a lot of Movie Actors are moving into the Television kingdom... It kind of shoked me when I saw Bradley Cooper in Limitless and now Ewan McGregor is going to be on the 3rd season of Fargo? 0____0 I can deal with seeing faces as pretty as Ewan once a year on a big screen, but weekly? I don't know how I'll be able to survive xD

It always makes me laugh whan I watch a show with brits and I always spot the same people... Seems like they have like 12 actors in the UK xD And theyre all so bloody good! A part from Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston, there's Tom Hollander that for me is always going to be Mr Collins xD, Olivia Colman from Broarchurch, Tobias Menzies from Outlander (poor guy... it must sucks to be him because I think now he's stuck with the evil guy/creep role... I would never be able to see him as an hero in any show) and Jonathan Aris from sherlock... Plus David Harewood from Supergirl! Maybe one day I'll have David Tennant and Hugh in the same show... A girl could wish, right?

Talking about David Harewood I saw an interview with him where he said Hugh stayed in character pretty much the whole time, and it doesn't surprise me since I remember Stephen Fry, once, saying that when they were having dinner in the US, and he was filming House, he kept speaking with an American accent. It must have been extremely creepy to stay in that character though. I'm so proud of him (and I know it's weitd) but he's such an insecure person and I know he works so hard and I'm happy when he gets a role that allowes him to show the worls how good he is!

So go watch the Night Manager and not just for Tom Hiddleston (who's marvellous anyway) but do it for Hugh too!

Yes, it seems like le Carré himself admitted Olivia's character is a great improvement on the narrative. <3

And, yes, I loved her in Broadchurch too, she's very talented.

Also, I watched Outlander too so I know what you mean about Tobias LOL
Or, to be precise, I watched the first season because OMG, the scenery, the costumes, timetravel and the female POV had me so excited! Except then came that scene with the beating and I was like: nope, not even timetravel (for which I'm an absolute sucker, it's like my number 1 narrative kink) is worth watching this. I mean, I kept watching on for some sort of inertia up until the first couple of episodes of the second season but now I can say I definitely stopped. Just, gah, I thought it was a feminist show. I still kind of want to bash Jamie's teeth with a shovel or something. Like, if anyone had done to me what Jaime had done to Claire you bet he could have forgotten me touching him voluntarily ever again. I just can't get behind what the hell is going on inside Claire's head and it's so frustrating...)

Also, I watched Outlander too so I know what you mean about Tobias LOL
The last two episodes of the first season of Outlander were extremely hard to watch. I read the book (just the first one) and I don't think I can find a word to describe my feelings toward certain scenes.

When you talk about the beating you're talking about Jamie "punishing" Claire? That was hard to watch/read too (and I felt rage reading it... hoping not to see that scene on the show) but I kept repeating myself it's the way it was in the past for husbands and wives... and just thinking about it makes me so sad because of all that we - as women - had to go through (and still have to on daily basis) for NO REASON WHATSOEVER... Damn it, it just rub me in the wrong way...

But going back to Tobias (otherwise I'll start my crazy rant and I won't be able to stop it) his character did something even worse on the last episode and I don't know why I'm watching anymore... The first couple of episode of season 2 were kind of light but now it's back to dark and that's just so gratuitous... I don't know what's going on on the writer's head... So twisted!!!

Yes, I was talking about that scene. I just... I understand Jaime's reasoning. I don't understand Claire. If I were Claire it would have immediately turned off whatever feelings I might have starting feeling for that man. I just can't reconcile that scene with Claire being in love with Jaime. Just- how can you be so madly in love with someone that beat you? Ever once, even if it was socially accepted at the time. It's something I can't wrap my head around and it just doesn't allow me to enjoy the show.
Plus I got irked by an interview Gabaldon made, basically defining reactions like mine excessive and ones of knee-jerk feminism. If this is knee-jerk feminism to her, I'm not sure I'm comfortable immersing myself in a world of her creation and immersed in her world-view.
/his character did something even worse on the last episode and I don't know why I'm watching anymore/ - OMG, even worse?!? O_o Worse than last season's horrific rape? (Which at least was interesting in its subversion, with the male character having been the one raped and not the female one. Plus I have to admit Jaime suffers beautifully.) IDK if I want to know what Randall did now. Except I kind of want to at the same time? *bites nails*

I can tell you if you want... I don't think I can do a spoiler tag on lj (I'm also on my phone right now) but I'm going to make a lot of space at the end of this post and cross the text... So if you want you can read it otherwise you can let it be... ;)
But before that I want to say WHAT? DID SHE REALLY SAY THAT? the only explanation/justification I was able to find for Claire was that he repented and said he didn't want to do it, but it was something he had to, even if it doesn't make sense, I can sort of accept Claire loving him anyway, also because of his good heart (in other occasions)... But still it was just too much and I think DG is just kind of crazy... Reading it was anyway as hard as trying to go through the first 50 pages of 50 shades of Grey (that I bough without knowing what it was about, before they decided to make a movie out of it... That came out at S Valentine LOL!)... 50 shades ended up in the trash bin right away... Never went past page 50 but my colleagues told me EVERYTHING about it without me asking... They were so excited... So I guess there is people who finds that kind of stuff enjoyable to read at least (living it on their skin probably not) and DG probably wants to reach that audience of create some sort of reaction among the people who finds that stuff disgusting and useless to the plot... Bad publicity is still publicity after all... Or she just hates her characters and likes to see them suffer... And now for what Randal did:

He raped a young boy, the little guy (10 yo I guess) was walking around and he stepped in a room, Randal came in and started raping him... Jamie stopped him but I don't know how far it went...

She totally did, here's the interview...
/I think DG is just kind of crazy/ - Yep... *shakes head*
/They were so excited.../ - LOL I do enjoy reading this kind of kinky stuff occasionally, nothing wrong with that -except that 50 shades is written *horribly*, I always find myself wanting to nod sagely whenever I come across people who loved the book. Like, oh, you sweet summer child, if only you knew fandom.. :D
That said, it's one thing if it's a fantasy and consensual it's another if it's not, I didn't find that scene titillating at all...
/living it on their skin probably not/ - Well, again, that's why they're called fantasies... *shrugs*

OMG, the little thief Jaime sort of took in?? Gah... I didn't stop watching a moment to soon...

To me 50SoG was wrong because she didn't want that. She wanted him. I was okay with the way he was dealing with his sexuality, and I can read about that it in fan fictions but only when both the characters are in for that... But she wasn't so I kind of see it as wrong... Like an emotional blackmail of sorts... I don't know if it makes sense... And yes, the writing was terrible! But again I didn't read it all and all I know is from what they said to me...

Yep you left the show right on time... And that brought to events that created more drama, more loss, an effing mess and so much sadness... I just hate the way DG treats her characters... But Sam and Caitriona are SO GOOD... They are amazing actors and they have a fantastic chemistry and I just have to watch it... I close my eyes and turn my head often but then I think they're acting and they're doing such a great job and I forget everything else :)

Of course, that too. I mean, I haven't read the book but I don't need to to know she got BDSM all wrong... *shakes head*
Still, had she got it right I still couldn't have suffered through her prose.. :D
/but only when both the characters are in for that/ - Yes, exactly, much like the infamous Claire and Jaime scene.
/But Sam and Caitriona are SO GOOD.../ - Oh, yes, the actors are really great!
